Evolution
What is Evolution?
The gradual change in a species over time
Who is the father of Evolution?
Charles Darwin
What island did he research? What did he collect on his journey?
Galapagos; fossils
What is Natural Selection?
When organisms better suited to an environment live to reproduce while those that cannot
survive die; also known as “survival of the fittest”
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NATURAL SELECTION AND EVOLUTION?
EVOLUTION- PROCESS BY WHICH MODERN ORGANISMS HAVE DESCENDED FROM ANCIENT
ORGANISMS.
NATURAL SELECTION- BASED ON THE PRINCIPLES OF GENETICS.
What are 5 Pieces of Evidence That Support Evolution?
• Fossil record
• Anatomy
– Homologous structures
– Analagous structures
• Vestigial structures
• Embryology
• Molecular biology (DNA differences)
What Causes Evolution?
1. Mutations: changes in DNA
2. Nonrandom mating: choosing a mate because of proximity (being near by) or certain
traits
3. Migration: Immigration = moving into a population; Emigration = moving out
4. Natural Selection: adapt or possibly become extinct
What are Adaptations?
Evolutionary process by which an animal becomes better suited for its environment.
Structural: body structures that allow an animal to find and consume food, defend itself,
and to reproduce its species.
Behavioral: see p. 4 in your notebook!!!
