7-4 Cellular Diversity
I.
Variation in Cellular Life
A. Unicellular Organisms- Single cell organisms including
yeast, algae, bacteria and protozoa (Kingdom – Protista)
B. Multicellular Organisms- organisms made of more than one
cell
1. Cell specialization- the ways different cells have evolved
to perform different tasks
2. Specialized Animal and Plant Cellsa. Red Blood Cells – lack a nucleus and carry oxygen
b. Muscle Cells- contain multiple nuclei and specialized
fibers (actin and myosin)
c. Guard Cells- cells that control the air getting in to a
plant’s leaf
C. Levels of Organization- begin with cells
1. Tissues- similar cells grouped together for a similar
function (muscle, nerve, connective or epithelial)
2. Organs- groups of different tissues working together to
perform a function
3. Organ System- a group of organs working together to
complete a specialized task
