SNC2P HISTOLOGY: A FEW OF THE MANY KINDS OF SPECIALIZED CELLS
The cell theory states that every cell comes from a previously existing cell. You started
life as a single fertilized egg. A towering maple tree also started as a single cell. The
many cells in a complex organism are not all identical, however. Look at your best
friend or any other living things around you: they are made up of cells with different
structures and different functions.
Plankton cells
Scalp skin cell
Pinus cell
Red blood cell
Type of Specialized Cell
Diatom cell
Sperm cell
Mold cells
Cardiac muscle cell
Description and Function
- type of involuntary muscle
found in the heart
- undergo contractions that
propel blood out of the heart
and into the rest of the body
- fit together tightly to cover
the outside of the body (in
particular here, the head)
- protect the cells inside and
reduces water loss
- are able to move
independently
- carry DNA from the male
parent to join an egg from
the female parents
- contain hemoglobin that
carries oxygen in the blood
- are smooth so that they
can easily pass through the
blood vessels
Scientific Drawing
- a major group of algae that
come in many different
shapes and sizes
- they are unicellular
- they are commonly used
as an environmental tool to
monitor water quality
- contains stem, used in
support, transport, storage
and production of tissue in
plants
- cones are the reproductive
structures in Pinus
- fungi that grow in multi
cellular filaments
- forms a connected network
and can be referred to as a
colony
- drifting organisms
inhabiting bodies of water
- have a wide range of sizes
and are a source of food to
larger aquatic organisms
Questions
1.Briefly explain how the appearance of tissue, when magnified, gives you clues about
the tissue’s function and identity.
2. Match the type of tissue to the correct function.
Epithelial
Transmits electrical signals
Muscle
Covers the surface of the body
Nervous
Transports nutrients and oxygen
Connective
Assists in body movement
