2nd Generation ATP®
tests answer the question
“Am I in control?” BUT
…what if the answer is
“No”?
Now you can find out why, through the
power of DNA.
Combining LuminUltra’s 2 Generation ATP monitoring
solutions with Microbe Detectives’ advanced DNA analysis
and classification service allows you to identify and analyze
the entire microbiome. This provides critical answers as to
why control was lost AND how to fix and prevent future
problems. For drinking water and wastewater utility
managers, that means mitigating risk while improving
capital and operating efficiencies.
nd
A Powerful Combination
Both tools can be used to audit new processes and identify
problem areas that require immediate attention. Once the
process is under control, keep it that way through daily
testing and monitoring via 2nd Generation ATP test kits and
software and periodic sampling for metagenomics profiles
to observe changes in microorganism types and
distribution.
The Microbe Detectives Difference
With many DNA measurement and sequencing service
providers on the market today, why did LuminUltra chose
Microbe Detectives? Because they offer MORE data.
They’ll not only tell you ‘who’ is in your sample – they will
also provide a report detailing what the presence of those
microorganisms means for your application and what you
can do about any challenges that are identified.
Harness the power of DNA analyses in the
following applications:
Wastewater
Drinking Water
The engine of biological wastewater treatment – the
microorganisms – can be difficult to manage thus making
these processes difficult to troubleshoot. Through Microbe
Detectives’ advanced metagenomics platform, nearly all
microorganisms are identified, providing ground-breaking
insight on optimization opportunities.
Culture tests are the standard test method for conducting
microbial analyses in water systems. However, you need to
know what you are looking for to get valuable information
from this style of test, meaning many threats may be missed.
One metagenomic analysis will tell you all of the types of
microorganisms that are present, and in what relative
proportion.
Nutrient Removal – DNA methods provide a reliable
method to detect and assess all microorganisms associated
with nitrification as well as phosphorous removal.
Foaming/Filament Control – Identification via a microscope
requires a trained technician and results can be somewhat
subjective. Take the guess-work completely out of the
equation and get a true picture of the situation at hand
through DNA quantification, which will definitively identify
all foaming and filamentous bacteria.
Anaerobic Digester Gas Production – DNA data can be
used to assess and track the health of the methanogen
population in anaerobic digesters. This information may
help operators optimize the process to produce more gas
and energy.

Source water investigations – Metagenomics can for
example indicate the presence of surface water microbes in
groundwater wells, thus serving as an effective source
tracking tool.
Pre-treatment assessment – With biological filtration
becoming a more commonly-used process for water pretreatment, understanding the make-up of the biological
community can be immensely valuable to achieve specific
treatment goals (e.g. organics/nutrient removal).
Distribution system surveys – Whether it be contamination
issues involving infiltration, biofilm proliferation, taste/odor
issues, or backflow events, metagenomics can shed light on
distribution issues to provide a holistic picture of specifically
what types of threats are present. When non-compliance
events occur, DNA data can indicate whether or not the
coliforms are naturally occurring environmental bacteria or
are associated with other fecal bacteria in the sample.
