Tissue- Collection of cells working together to perform a function. Body Systems- Collection of organs working together to perform a function. Mechanical Digestion- Tearing, grinding and mashing of teeth and muscles. Chemical Digestion- Digestive enzymes break chemical bonds so nutrients can be absorbed. 1 Digestive Enzymes- A protein that breaks down nutrients in order to be absorbed by the body. Mouth- Mechanical digestion with tongue and teeth. Chemical digestion with saliva which contains amylase, an enzyme that breaks down starch into simple sugars. 2 Esophagus- Organ that connects mouth to the stomach. Stomach- Mechanical digestion with the 3 layers of muscles that churn the food. Gastric juice (water, enzymes, HCl) chemically digests food. Pepsin begins the break down of protein into amino acids. Mucus is secreted by stomach cells to protect cells from gastric juice. 3 Small Intestine- Majority of nutrients are absorbed here. Duodenum is the first section of S.I. and most nutrients absorbed in this section. Pancreatic juices and Bile are secreted into S.I. to break down fats. Bile is made by the Liver and stored in the gall bladder. 4 Large Intestine- Absorbs water into the body. Diffusion- Movement of molecules from high to low concentrations. (Passive Transport) Active Transport- Energy from the cell used to pass molecules through cell membranes. 5
