Standard:
SB1: Students will analyze the nature of the relationship between structure and functions in living cells.
Element A: Explain the role of cells for both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, including the cell membrane.
Learning Goal:
Students will understand the 4 characteristics of living things.

Characteristics of Life activity: Students will read a statement and determine the characteristic
represented.
Deconstruct the standards
Students will access the Cell Structure & Function Quizlet from Mrs. Cox’s Quizlet. They will
make a list of terms they know, terms they have heard before but cannot define, and terms they
have never heard before. Teacher will make a class list.
Teacher will give a Socrative review for the quiz.
Closing Activity:

Assessment/Evaluation:
Teacher will use completed Socrative activity to evaluate student understanding.

characteristics of living things.
Students will understand the three parts of the cell theory & the scientists who contributed to it.

Students will take a quiz over the themes of biology and characteristics of living things

o Fill out a graphic organizer (critical thinking skills; picking and using GO)
o Complete a timeline of Scientists on White paper (writing across curriculum)
Summarizing Strategy:
Name two important scientists and list their contribution(s) to the cell theory.

Students will compare & contrast prokaryotic & eukaryotic cells.
Students will distinguish between the structure & function of organelles in plant and animal cells.

Teacher will give a Socrative Assessment with five (5) questions on the cell theory and the
scientists.
Teacher will discuss similarities and differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
o Students will complete a Venn Diagram for comparison
Students will then complete the Organelles Graphic Organizer using the Organelle Presentation
which is posted in OLC.
o They must show structure and function of each organelle from plant and animal cells
Students will complete a T chart comparing prokaryotic & eukaryotic cells.

Teacher will review the completed Socrative Assessment and the GO’s for differentiation and
review.
