Exhibit Scavenger Hunt
Before you go to the Shake House, explore the exhibit!
Answer the questions below. Feel free to work with a partner or a team.

Inside the Earth
» Fill in the blanks. What causes plates of the Earth’s crust to move?
A cycle of __heating________ and_____cooling________ in the _mantle_____ .
» Match each layer of the Earth with the “ingredient” that forms it.
liquid
iron and nickel
INNER CORE
the
least dense solid rock
OUTER CORE
solid
iron
INNER MANTLE
solid
rock
UPPER MANTLE

Life Drifts
Extra credit discovery!
At which type of boundary
are earthquakes most likely to
occur: convergent, divergent,
or transform?
Ratites
Flightless birds evolved on different continents after Gondwana broke apart.
»
Draw arrows connecting each bird to the place where it evolved.
Did you know?
Opossums are the only
marsupials found in North
America!
OSTRICH

ELEPHANT BIRD

Marsupials
» How did marsupials reach what is now Australia?
They walked across Antarctica when the two continents were still connected.
» How did opossums reach what is now North America?
They walked over the land bridge at the Isthmus of Panama that connects North and South America.

Earthquake
Evidence of Plate Movement
Mesosaur Fossils
Mesosaurs were reptiles that lived hundreds of millions of years ago. Today’s scientists
found fossils of these creatures on the southern tips of both South America and Africa.
»
How are these fossils evidence of plate movement? Explain your reasoning.
Answers will vary. Since mesosaurs are reptiles that couldn’t swim across an entire
ocean, they must have lived when the two continents were one. South America and
Africa then split due to plate movement, so we find different, related fossils on each.
California Faults
San Francisco Shakes
As you wait in line, try to fill in the blanks with answers from the sign on the window.
Bonus Points!
Find an example of an
organism alive today that
provides more evidence for
drifting plates (Hint: Look at
the plants behind you!)
The San Andreas Fault is a _____transform________________ fault which can
cause earthquakes of up to __8.0___ moment magnitude (Mw). This type
of fault rarely causes the large ocean waves called ____tsunami_______ , but
earthquakes in subduction zones often do. The earth along either side of
the San Andeas Fault moves steadily at a rate of about __5 __ cm per year.
Get Prepared
On Shaky Ground
Find this map on the wall. What do the different colors represent?
»
What kind of ground lies beneath your home? ___answers will vary_________
»
What kind of ground lies beneath your school? __answers will vary_________
»
Considering this, which place is safer during an earthquake? Explain why.
answers will vary
»
After exploring the Get Prepared section of the exhibit, list 3 things that you
will do with your family to prepare for an earthquake: answers will vary
1. Make an emergency plan
2. Secure your home
3. Get an emergency kit
Fault Planes
Can you find any faults on this
map? Are the faults examples
of convergent, divergent, or
transform boundaries? In your
head, draw arrows on the map
that show the direction of
plate motion.
