Word Bank
Warm up:
Case of the Crown Jewels
1. Who was the culprit of the crime?
2. How did you know that the other
suspects are not guilty?
3. How is a DNA fingerprint similar to a
finger print on your hand? How is it
different?

Anticipation Guide
BEFORE READING: In the space to left of each statement, place a √ (check
mark) if you agree or think the statement is true. DURING or AFTER
Reading: Add new check marks or cross through the ones you’ve changed
your mind about.
_______ “Photo” means picture and “synthesis” means put together, so
“photosynthesis” means putting together a photo album.
_______ Plants make their own food, that is why they are called
“producers”
_______ Let's think of photosynthesis as a recipe, the ingredients are Light
+ Water + Oxygen.
_______ Plants can absorb sunlight like a battery, by using chlorophyll in
their cells.
_______ After finishing photosynthesis, plants release oxygen into the air.

WHY IS PHOTOSYNTHESIS SO
IMPORTANT?
PHOTOSYNTHESIS is one of the most
important
biological process on earth!
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Plants Need
Plants Make
Sunlight (energy)
Sugar (Food)
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Oxygen (O2)
Water
Water
· Provides the oxygen (O2) we
breathe
· Consumes extra Carbon Dioxide
CO2
· Makes Plant Food
· Gives US food!
The word
photosynthesis is
made up of a prefix
(photo) and a root
word (synthesis).
“Photo” means
light, “synthesis”
means put together,
so “photosynthesis”
means putting
together with light.
Plants use light to
put together, or
make, their food!
How Are Plants and Animals Different?
·Animals cannot make their own
food.
·Animals do NOT have chlorophyll
(even green animals don’t have it!)
