Natural Selection and Charles Darwin By Isaac Valenzuela Sean Riddle Jaiden Coleman Dilan Vincent Charles Darwin Charles Darwin was born on February 12, 1809.Charles Darwin is best known for his work as a naturalist, developing a theory of evolution to explain biological change. He studied specimens around the globe led him to formulate his theory of evolution. He had 3 medals and they were royal medals, Wollaston medal and the Copley medal. He died April 19, 1882. Galapagos Finches Found on the Galapagos islands, they are also known as Darwin’s Finches. They are considered to be one of the world's fastest evolving vertebrae. Their appearance and behavior quickly adapted the the rapidly changing environment. Today the finches are being attacked by a parasitic fly. Natural Selection In natural selection, those variations in the genotype that increase an organism’s chances of survival and procreation are preserved and multiplied from generation to generation at the expense of less advantageous ones. Evolution often occurs as a consequence of this process. Natural selection may arise from differences in survival, in fertility, in rate of development, in mating success. HMS Beagle The HMS Beagle was a Cherokee class 10 gun brig sloop on the royal naval one of more than 100 of it's class. The vessel, constructed at a cost of £7,803, was launched on 11 May 1820 from the Woolwich Dockyard on the River Thames. Brittanica Origin of Species The Origins of Species is a book written by Charles Darwin. It introduce the concept of natural selection. Natural selection is a natural process of acts to to preserve and accumulate minor advantageous variations within living systems. If a member of a species were to develop a functional advantage,an example is if a reptile grew wings and flew. Fitness isn’t how strong or dominant an animal is, but is how it can survive, find a mate, and reproduce. You would determine an animal's fitness by how an animal leaves more offspring than another. evolution.berkeley.edu Survival Of The Fittest “A 19th-century concept of human society, inspired by the principle of natural selection, postulating that those who are eliminated in the struggle for existence are the unfit.””The individuals that are best equipped to survive and reproduce perpetuate the highest frequency of genes to descendant populations. This is the principle known colloquially as survival of the fittest.” Resources cited www.biography.com www.bbc.co.ku www.britannica.com www.dictionary.reference.com
