Name__________________________________________period________ Chapter 7: EVOLUTION Choose 5 boxes in order to form a Plus sign (+) or an X. You MUST use the middle square! Do each activity on a separate sheet of paper. Staple each sheet to the back of this paper. Define all ten vocabulary terms from Chapter 7. Explain how generation time (the time to reproduce) influences the rate at which a species can evolve. Include a graph to show the relationship between rate of evolution and generation time. Summarize the ideas that Darwin developed from books by Malthus and Lyell. How did they influence his idea of evolution by natural selection? Define and illustrate the four parts of Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. Use your own species. Figure 7 on page 178 can be used to help you. The illustrations must be colored. Summarize Darwin’s findings on the finches of the Galapagos Islands. How did the same finches have different beaks? Describe how they became different species. Illustrate (draw pictures) how fossil records indicate that whales are from the ancestors of the Pakicetus. Explain the similarities you see in each organism as well. Compare and contrast selective breeding and natural selection using a Venn Diagram. Explain in detail the two ways that organisms can be compared to provide evidence of evolution from a common ancestor. Use the following terms to create a concept map: struggle to survive, theory, genetic variation, Darwin, overpopulation, natural selection, and successful reproduction Total point is out of 50 (each box is 10 points) _____________________/50 Due date:____Monday, March 30th________
