Beginning to Understand Ethics In two or three brief, clear sentences answer the following questions. Ethics is a part of philosophy. What is the basic question of ethics? What is ethics about? How can we best describe ethics? Lisa, this is a nonanswer. The question IS What is ethics about? Describe ethics as emotivism. This deals with ones expression of feelings or emotional attitude. An individual may express feelings of pleasure or displeasure at another person’s behaviour or actions. There was a typo in my question. It should read: Describe ethics as emotivism. Describe ethics as cultural relativism. Cultural relativism is viewed as all beliefs, customs, and ethics are relative to the individual within his own social context/ society. This means ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ are cultural specific. What is considered moral in one society may be considered immoral in another, and, since no universal standard of morality exists, no one has the right to judge another society’s customs. Yes! Describe ethics as subjectivism. Subjectivism is ethical statements that are personal/individual opinion. This does not have objective moral facts but subjective opinions. Yes! If ethics is not a matter of feeling or opinion, what do you believe is the real foundation or root of ethics? The field of ethics involves systematizing, defending, and recommending concepts of right and wrong behaviour. It is our means of deciding a course of action, without it, our actions would be random and aimless. The question asks what YOU believe is the foundation of ethics. When you make a moral decision, on what reasoning or foundation do you make it?
