In lesson 1.15, we looked at the advantages of cell specialization in multi-cellular
organisms (such as ourselves). Cell specialization is when cells come in a variety of sizes
and shapes, each designed to carry out a special function. For example, our lungs are
composed of cells that are very thin, to allow the exchange of oxygen to occur. The
lining of our stomach is composed of cells that are very thick to withstand the powerful
acid inside our stomachs.
