Atomic Structure- Ch 4 Daltons Atomic Theory • 1. All elements are composed of tiny indivisible particles called atoms. • 2. Atoms of the same element are identical. The atoms of one element are different from the atoms of another element. • 3. Atoms of different elements can physically mix together or can chemically combine in simplewhole number ratios to form compounds. • 4. Chemical reactions occur when atoms are separated, joined or rearranged. Modern Atomic Theory All matter is composed of atoms Atoms cannot be subdivided, created, or destroyed in ordinary chemical reactions. However, these changes CAN occur in nuclear reactions! Atoms of an element have a characteristic average mass which is unique to that element. Atoms of any one element differ in properties from atoms of another element The Discovery of an Electron • 1897- J.J.
