Questions/Main Ideas
Grade: __6______
Notes/Examples
Multiplying Fractions: Multiply the numerators. Then
multiply the denominators. Then Simplify.
Example: 3/5 * 1/2
3*1=3
5 * 2 = 10.
The fraction is 3/10.
Multiplying Mixed Numbers: To find the product of mixed
numbers, write each mixed number as an improper fraction
before multiplying.
Example: 2 2/3 * 3 1/4
2 2/3= 8/3
3 1/4= 13/4
8/3 * 13/4
8 * 13 = 104
3 * 4= 12
OR
Simplify
26/ 3 = 8 2/3
8 and 4 have a GCF of 4 so we
can divide both 8 and 4 by 4.
8/4 =2 and 4/4 = 1
2/3 * 13/1
2 * 13 = 26 and 1 *3 = 3
26/3 = 8 2/3
Dividing Fractions: To divide fractions, multiply by the
reciprocal.
Reciprocal- Two numbers are reciprocals if their product is 1.
Example 2/3 * 3/2 = 1.
3/2 is the reciprocal of 2/3.
Example: 1/5 ÷ 1/4
1/5 * 4/1 = 4/5
Example: 7 ÷ 3/5
7/1 * 5/3 = 35/3 = 11 2/3
Dividing Mixed Numbers: To divide mixed numbers, start by
writing the numbers a s improper fractions.
Example: 2 1/4 ÷ 3
2 1/4 = 9/4
3 = 3/1
9/4 ÷ 3/1 = 9/4 * 1/3 = 9/12
Simplify
9/12= 3/4
