Rules for Working with Fractions (Rational Numbers): Subtract or Add Unlike Fractions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Find a common denominator Multiply numerator and denominator by the opposite denominator. Re-write the problem with the new like denominators. Subtract or Add to solve. Simplify (if necessary). Multiply Fractions: 1. Multiply straight across. →→→ top x →→→ Bottom x 2. Simplify. top bottom Divide Fractions: 1. Convert Mixed Numbers to Improper Fractions 2. KCF (Keep Change Flip) Multiply by the inverse (flip) of the second fraction. 3. Rewrite the multiplication problem using KCF. 4. Multiply straight across top and bottom. 5. Simplify.
