Compatible numbers are numbers you can compute easily.
One compatible number divides evenly into the other.
Use basic facts, multiples of the divisor to find a
compatible number.
You can use compatible numbers to estimate quotients.
Ex. 554
8
1. Think: What are the multiples of 8?
8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 56, 64
Which multiple is closest?
56 is closest to 55, so the compatible number will be
560.
2. Divide. 560
8 = 70
3. A good estimate of 554
8 = 70
