Immune Response
Immune System
• Responsible for protecting the body from
disease.
• 3 lines of defense
1st Line of Defense
• SKIN!
• Acts as a barrier to invading pathogens.
2nd Line of Defense
• Occurs when injured cells release
chemicals that increase the blood flow to
an invaded region.
• The blood brings white blood cells that
attack the pathogens.
• Macrophage: a type of white blood cell
that engulfs and kills pathogens.
3rd Line of Defense
• Involves attacking specific pathogens.
• Macrophages, T Cells, and B Cells attack
and kill infected cells.
Active Immunity
• The body is exposed to a pathogen and
produces antigens specific to that
pathogen.
• Person can be exposed accidentally or
purposefully by vaccination.
Passive Immunity
• The antibodies are passed from one
individual to another.
• Usually through pregnancy.
