To keep your body healthy & battle off pathogens.
-Barriers trap & kill most pathogens
- Skin
- Breathing Passage (mucus, sneezing, coughing)
- Mouth & Stomach (chemicals destroy germs)
-Special White Blood Cells engulf & destroy pathogens
-Inflammation brings more blood flow and white blood cells to area
-Fever
Different types of White Blood Cells distinguish between different kinds of
pathogens & react with a defense targeted at it.
Produce antibodies- special protein that helps destroy germ
-White Blood Cells remember pathogen
-Unlikely to get same disease again unless different version
Vaccination
-Contains weakened or killed pathogens
-Produces Antibodies to help the body recognize germ if exposed to the real
thing
