- Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth
Edition (DSM-IVTR)
It’s the big book where we get all the information on mental
disorders, substance abuse and other mental health concerns.
- Clinical Syndromes (Axis I)
This is what we typically think of as the diagnosis.
Depression, Schizophrenia, social phobia .
- Developmental/Personality Disorders (Axis II)
Developmental disorders include autism and mental
retardation. Personality disorders are clinical syndromes and
encompass the way an individual interacts with the world. Paranoia,
Antisocial, Borderline Personality Disorder.
- Physical Conditions (Axis III)
Any condition that makes any other condition
worse or physical illness that can display mental illness
symptoms such as HIV/AIDS or head trauma.
- Severity of Psychosocial Stressors (Axis IV)
Events such as death, job, employment that can
impact a conditions. (Psst…this is where you pay attention)
- Functioning Level (Axis V)
A final determination of where a person is
according to the mental illness breakdown.
- Adjustment Disorders
A significantly more difficult adjustment to a life situation than would
normally be expected considering the circumstances. Sometimes you can’t
just “suck it up”.

Features abnormal or inappropriate anxiety to situations.

Failure or difficulty in controlling impulses despite negative consequences.

Exaggerated or inappropriate moods that extend beyond a normal mood curve.
