WEEK 2 - THEORY OF EVOLUTION BY NATURAL SELECTION
My lectures used an historical approach to demonstrate how Darwin's theory of evolution
developed. From these lectures I expect that you should now be able to:
1) Illustrate the difference between Darwin and Lamark's theories of evolution
2) Discriminate between biological and other forms of evolution
3) Differentiate among prevailing thoughts from each of the 5 major stages in the
development of evolution theory
4) Explain how three major theories were used to build Darwin's theory of natural
selection.
5) Illustrate how different species can originate from a common ancestor
6) Illustrate the importance of intermediate forms to Darwin's theory.
7) Explain the importance of Mendel's genetics theory to Darwin's theory
8) Explain the importance of The Modern Synthesis to Darwin's theory
9) Develop simple thought experiments that illustrate an understanding of Darwin's
theory
