In order to build experience and “learn by doing”, COP 1launched a pilot phase of activities implemented jointly (AIJ), under which Annex I Parties may implement projects in other countries that reduce emissions of greenhouse gases or enhance their removal through sinks. Activities Implemented Jointly In 1995, Belize became one of the first countries to host a project under the pilot phase of Activities Implemented Jointly- the Rio Bravo Sequestration Project Belize Greenhouse Gas Inventory by Sector (1994) Greenhouse Gases Gigagrams Energy 617.528 21.8 Industrial processes and solvents 1.735 <1 Agriculture 46.4146 1.6 Land-Use change & 2,056.3650 72.747 Waste 104.700 3.7 Forestry Percentage of Total Emissions Belize Greenhouse Gas Inventory by Sector (1997) Greenhouse Gases Gigagrams Energy 1, 026.7511 Percentage of Total Emissions 12.6 Industrial processes and solvents 1.8001 <1 Agriculture 1.5846 <1 Land-Use change & 7,117.7162 87.34 Waste 1.5141 <1 Forestry Belize Greenhouse Gas Inventory by Sector (2000) Greenhouse Gases Gigagrams Energy 1,127.995 Industrial processes and solvents Percentage of Total Emissions 8.361 2.1972 <1 2.0825 <1 Forestry 12,349.2819 91.593 Waste 1.9158 <1 Agriculture Land-Use change & Belize’s Eligibility to participate in CDM Date of Signature of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Date of Ratification of UNFCCC 13th June 1992 Date of Ratification of the Kyoto Protocol 26th September 2003 Establish DNA 2011 31st October 1994 Mitigation Potential In Belize Methane Abatement - potential for utilizing the methane emission produced at primary solid waste disposal sites for electrical generation, as a viable and economy friendly operation San Benito Solar Panel: pilot project -replacement of incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs - Opportunities: Establish sustainability and continuity plan for existing and new solar systems . Important for policymakers Mitigation Potential In Belize There was overall increased interest in solar systems among rural and remote communities of Toledo. Cogeneration Projects Analysis of mitigation on GHGs Emission through hydropower generation and biomass cogeneration of electrical energy It has the potential to manage 31.5 MW Renewable energy power plants Mitigation Potential In Belize Hydromaya A Generating station is a 3.15 MW run off river plant located in Toledo District This is an independent power producing station and sells its power to Belize Electricity Limited Capacity Building Project EU-UNEP Project- Capacity building project $129,000 USDimplementing agency- UNEP Risoe Centre.
