(2000) Climate Change, ©JES Role of UK Agriculture and Implications for Defra Science • Ensure that the UK is food secure through a combination of affordable, nutritious domestic production and imports • UK needs to promote the right international framework to increase food production in a socially and environmentally sustainable manner: • CAP reform • Doha that reduces OECD agricultural tariffs and distortions, addresses escalating tariffs, and promotes developing country access to wider markets • Enhance agricultural R&D, e.g., CGIAR; capacity-development • Develop new agricultural knowledge and products (improved crop traits to address climate change) that can be used in developing countries • Defra will continue to focus on agricultural R&D aimed at global public goods, i.e., climate change, sustainable water, farming and food sectors
