Announcements • Turn in Homework – SA 2-3 – Chart of organic compounds Review • What is the function of a lipid? • T/F Carbon can stably bind with other carbons? • What is the monomer of a protein? • BONUS – What is dehydration synthesis? What is hydrolysis? Basic Enzyme Information • What are enzymes? – Enzymes are proteins. Proteins are made from amino acids. Different combination of amino acids will create different structures of protein. The structure determines function of protein (enzyme) • Purpose – Acts as a catalyst for a reaction to take place. It simply lowers the needed energy for a reaction to take place. Enzymes are not used up in during a chemical reaction Paper towel demo • What makes up a paper towel? • Reaction equation – Cellulose + Oxygen Carbon Dioxide + Water • So let’s try to make the reaction happen Effect of Enzymes Section 2-4 Reaction pathway without enzyme Activation energy without enzyme Reactants Reaction pathway with enzyme Activation energy with enzyme Products Go to Section: Figure 2-19 Chemical Reactions Section 2-4 Energy-Absorbing Reaction Energy-Releasing Reaction Activation energy Products Activation energy Reactants Reactants Products Go to Section: Figure 2-19 Chemical Reactions Section 2-4 Energy-Absorbing Reaction Energy-Releasing Reaction Activation energy Products Activation energy Reactants Reactants Products Go to Section: Enzyme Lab • • We are going to test the effects of temperature on enzyme activity. Liver contains the enzyme catalase which breaks up H2O2 into H2O and O2 – H2O2 H2O and O2 Proper lab write-up • • • • • Introduction (paraphrase) Hypothesis (which temp is best) Materials (what did you use) Procedure (what did you do) Data and Observations (charts and averages) • Questions (3 in the lab) • Conclusion (use data to state the best) Lab Write Up Hints • Neatness counts – If you can type it, you will receive more points • Procedure – Write the procedure as though you will give it to someone who never took biology • Graphs/charts – Use graphs (labeled) and data tables Homework • SA 2-4 page 53 #1-5 • Start looking at the back of the sheet to review for the test next week – Day 2 • Have a good day
