Stage 1: INTERPHASE
By Connor, Sadé, Evan, and
Lindsey
Introducing Interphase
• Interphase is the first stage of the cell
cycle
• During interphase, cells grow, make
copies of their DNA, and prepare to
divide into two new cells
• CELL CYCLE: The regular sequence of
growth and division that cells go through
Growth
• In the first part of interphase, cells grow
to their full size and produce structures
they need
• Cells make copies of their mitochondria
and chloroplasts
Copying DNA
• Copying DNA is the second part of Interphase
• Cells make a perfect copy of their DNA in its
nucleus
• This process is called REPLICATION
• DNA is found in the chromatin in the nucleus
• DNA: Holds all the information that the cell
needs to carry out its functions
Copying DNA (continued)
• Each daughter cell must have a
complete set of DNA to survive, so DNA
replication is very important
• At the end of replication, the cell will
contain identical sets of DNA
Cells prepare for division
• Once the replication process is
complete, the cell prepares to divide
• The cell produces structures that it will
use to divide into two new cells
• At the end of Interphase, the cell is
ready to divide
