Jason Bernard Christopher Rodriguez Christian Lopez Vignette: " Borderline Bob is the first to say something when the donuts for the office do no arrive. 'Well, that's the last time I ever order from Dirk's Donuts,' he growls. 'The food isn't even very good!' His friends are silent remembering that only last month, Bob was praising Dirk's for having the best donuts in the city. Since Bob has borderline personality disorder, he often engages in this type of black-and-white thinking, or splitting. Everything is either all-good or all-bad, and Borderline Bob swings wildly between the two. As a result, many of his relationships with people tend to be unstable. He's actually been known to go out and get a beer or two with Dirk, but is now ranting and calling him a 'donut-shilling dirt bag!" Definition: People with this disorder tend to see things "Black and White." It's either one way or the other. (Ex: Good/Bad) They have long term patterns of turbulent/unstable emotions. Symptoms: Fear of being abandoned Feelings of emptiness and boredom Frequent displays of inappropriate anger - anger at wrong things Impulsiveness with money, substance abuse, sexual relationships, binge eating, or shoplifting Intolerance of being alone Repeated crises and acts of self-injury, such as wrist cutting or overdosing Theories of Development: The causes unknown. Genetic, family, and social factors are thought to play roles. Increasing risk include: being abandoned as a child, sexual abuse, poor communication w/ family, and disrupted family life. Vignette: A 27-year-old banker who had already earned his first million had developed a false story about his upbringing in a foreign country. The story evolved from a series of non delusional “sliding away from the truth,” which are frequently used by narcissistic patients to support their grandiosity. Fully aware of its falsehood, he elaborated on the story to friends and acquaintances, as well as to the woman with whom he lived and planned to marry. On introducing her to his family, however, his duplicity was (predictably) revealed, and he entered treatment ashamed and panic-stricken after the loss of his admiring girlfriend. Although he acknowledged that her anger with him was justified, he was shocked with self-righteous fury when she actually decided to leave him. Definition: a personality disorder in which the individual is described as being excessively preoccupied with issues of personal adequacy, power, prestige and vanity. Symptoms Reacts to criticism with anger, shame, or humiliation May take advantage of others to reach his or her own goal Tends to exaggerate their own importance, achievements, and talents Imagines unrealistic fantasies of success, beauty, power, intelligence, or romance Requires constant attention and positive reinforcement from others Easily becomes jealous Treatment Hospitalization The hospitalization of patients with severe Narcissistic Personality occurs frequently. Individual Psychotherapy Group Therapy Vignette: Tommy Lynn Sells at first glance may have appeared to be a normal man, however, he was living with a treacherous secret. He had been killing over 70 people, the first starting at the age of 16. His murders were mostly directed to children due to the fact that he didn't want them to feel the pain he had felt of being abused as a child. The survivor of his murders which led to his capture said, "To be honest he was blank. I mean... There was no emotion." She claims he didn't hesitate to slit her throat." What Anti-Social is: Anti-Social personality disorder can be describe as a chronic mental illness in which a person thinking is destructive and leads to the violation of others, most likely in a criminal manner. Symptoms Include: Disregard for right and wrong- doesn't know the difference of right nor wrong. Persistent lying or deceit- Lies naturally. Combination of mental and medical health help treat antisocial.
