Musical phrases are passed between one group
of performers and another. In performance
they are sometimes placed at opposite sides of
the stage.
Homophonic textures are sometimes called
melody and accompaniment as the melody is
usually the top (highest part) of the texture. It
is also referred to as this when the
accompaniment is broken chords.

A melody in the bass which is repeated
throughout the music. The harmony above it
usually changes.
A conjunct melody moves by step.

accompaniment. The notes of the chord are

Acciaccatura
An ornament that plays a non-harmony note
and resolves onto a harmony note.

semitone above or below the main note.
Sometimes called a crushed note as it is played
very quickly before the main melody note it is
decorating.

A melodic phrase is immediately repeated at a
different pitch – often a step higher or lower.

the same but can have slight changes such as
starting at a different pitch.
Pentatonic music is made from a scale that
