TEXTURE AND MELODY TEXTURE AND MELODY Homophonic Polyphonic/Contrapuntal A texture where the parts play different notes but move in the same rhythm. A texture where the parts play different notes and different rhythms. Often described as interweaving melodies. TEXTURE AND MELODY TEXTURE AND MELODY Imitation Canon When another part enters and copies the musical phrase that has just been heard. Where performers play the same tune starting one after the other to create an overlapping effect. TEXTURE AND MELODY TEXTURE AND MELODY Unison Octaves All the parts are playing the same rhythm and the same pitch All the parts are playing the same rhythm but the pitch is an octave apart. TEXTURE AND MELODY TEXTURE AND MELODY Antiphonal Melody and accompaniment Musical phrases are passed between one group of performers and another. In performance they are sometimes placed at opposite sides of the stage. Homophonic textures are sometimes called melody and accompaniment as the melody is usually the top (highest part) of the texture. It is also referred to as this when the accompaniment is broken chords. TEXTURE AND MELODY TEXTURE AND MELODY Ground bass Conjunct A melody in the bass which is repeated throughout the music. The harmony above it usually changes. A conjunct melody moves by step. TEXTURE AND MELODY TEXTURE AND MELODY Disjunct Triadic/broken chords/arpeggio A disjuct melody moves mostly by leaps. This can be a melody or form part of the accompaniment. The notes of the chord are played separately. TEXTURE AND MELODY TEXTURE AND MELODY Appoggiatura Acciaccatura An ornament that plays a non-harmony note and resolves onto a harmony note. TEXTURE AND MELODY An ornament which is played a tone or semitone above or below the main note. Sometimes called a crushed note as it is played very quickly before the main melody note it is decorating. TEXTURE AND MELODY Sequence Repetition A melodic phrase is immediately repeated at a different pitch – often a step higher or lower. TEXTURE AND MELODY A melodic phrase is repeated. TEXTURE AND MELODY Imitation Pentatonic A melodic phrase is repeated. Usually exactly the same but can have slight changes such as starting at a different pitch. The term used to describe an ostinato when heard in popular music.
