CH: ADVERTISING
I. Answer the following questions in one or two sentences.
1. What do you understand by the term advertisement?
 An advertisement is something that is published to persuade a
consumer to buy a product or use a service.
 Advertisements inform consumers about products and try to
present the products as a solution to the consumer’s needs.
2. Name the different types of advertisement.
The different types of advertising are commercial advertising, noncommercial advertising and social advertising.
3. What are the different ways of advertising?
Advertising can be carried out through newspapers, magazines,
television, hoardings, posters, bills, radio, etc.
4. What is consumerism?
The desire to consume more and more of a product regardless of need is
known as consumerism.
5. What are the two disadvantages of advertising?
Advertisements can be quite misleading. Advertising tends to exaggerate
the merits of a product and lures consumers into buying it.
II.Answer the following questions in four or five sentences.
1. Why are brands created?
 Brands are created so that they can be used to identify a product.
 Through a brand, the identity of the product, service or business is
known.
 Brands also help to differentiate products in the market.
 Brands are represented by names, symbols and logos.
2. What is the purpose of social advertising?
 Social advertising is a form of non-commercial advertising.
 It aims at creating awareness among the public about an important
social issue.
 Literacy campaigns and polio campaigns are examples of social
advertising.
 Sometimes large enterprises sponsor advertisements which convey
social messages.
 For example, NDTV and Toyota have launched a campaign called
Greenathon.
 This campaign urges citizens to do their bit to preserve their
environment.
3. What are some of the advantages of advertising?
Some of the advantages of advertising are:
• It creates demand for a product among consumers
• It encourages competition among brands
• It identifi es the Unique Selling Proposition of a product
• It ensures that the product has a stable market
4. How is media and advertising interrelated?
 Advertisements are an important source of income for the media.
 Hence, advertisements regularly appear in newspapers, magazines,
posters, handbills, etc.
 In this way, advertising is used to reach large numbers of people.
5. Why are advertisement criticized?
 The desire to consume more and more of a product regardless of
need is known as consumerism.
 This is one of the criticisms of advertising.
 People begin to place greater value on commodities and are pushed
by an unhealthy desire to consume more.
 Another criticism of advertising is that it can be quite misleading.
 Advertising tends to exaggerate the merits of a product and lures
consumers into buying it.
