WHY DID SOUTH WENT TO WAR WITH NORTH?
FIRST REASON: The most common response would be that the Civil War was
fought over slavery. While abolitionists were seeking to resolve the slavery issue,
their numbers were not high enough to catapult the country to war.
SECOND REASON: The reality is that it went much deeper than the issue of
slavery. The Southern states felt that the federal government had too much
control over what happened in their individual states. Slavery was part of it, but it
was far from the only concern they had. They seceded from the Union in an effort
to create their own sovereign nation where states' rights took precedence over
the rights of the federal government.
THIRD REASON: On the other hand, the Northern states felt that the states did
not have the right to secede from the Union. President Lincoln and many others
felt that once a state joined the Union, it was a permanent commitment. The North
went to war to prevent a division of the Union, not because of slavery. Abolition
of slavery was a result of the war, but not necessarily the driving force that led
the North and South to enter war.
WHY DID NORTH WENT TO WAR WITH SOUTH?
FIRST REASON: North claim that the 1860-1861 secession of the
Southern States which caused the Civil War was not a result of the
slavery issue but rather of oppressive federal economic policies.
SECOND REASON: South Carolina became the first state to decide in
the affirmative, and its secession document repeatedly declared that
it was leaving the Union to preserve slavery
THIRD REASON: The Northerners had more men, more factories, and more
weapons. The Northern military leaders were weaker than the Southern leaders.

1. What advantages did the South and North have in the US Civil War?
The North had a larger population base and a huge industrial base. It could produce more finished
goods such as guns and armaments. There was more money in the North. The United States was
better recognized by foreign governments as an established nation, so the Confederacy had a harder
time obtaining foreign credit and aid. The states in the Union had an easier time recognizing a central
government so organizing the army was easier, and Lincoln's authority was better recognized. The
North also had a better developed system of roads and railroads.
2. What was the first state to secede from the union?
The only state that declared their secession in 1860 was South Carolina on 20 December 1860. Six
other states declared secession between then and Lincoln's inauguration on 4 March 1861. When the
Civil War began at Fort Sumter on 12 April 1861 four additional states opted to secede.
3. Most Civil War battles were fought over control of what two modes of
transport? Water and railroads.
