 A transitive verb takes a direct object.

 A direct object is a noun or pronoun and is never in a prepositional phrase; it
follows an action verb; you can ask yourself, “subject, verb, what?” OR “subject,
verb, whom?”
 A prepositional phrase is a group of words beginning with a preposition and ending
with a noun or pronoun.
