Lesson 09
Electricity and Magnetism
PRE-LESSON: MAGNETISM
Purpose: To see the effects of magnetic fields produced by magnets.
BAR MAGNETS
1. Open the interactive simulation titled “Magnetic Field of a Bar Magnet”.
2. Click through the activity and summarize your findings below:

MAGNETIC FIELD LINES
1. Open the interactive simulation titled “Magnetic Field Lines Surrounding a Bar Magnet”.
2. The activity above shows the direction of the magnetic field around each bar magnet. Using this
activity, draw at least six magnetic field lines on either side of the magnet and decide which pole is
on each side.
MAGNETIC DOMAINS
1. Open the website titled “Magnetic Domain” and answer the questions below on the back of this
page.
2. Define magnetic domain.
3. How did you magnetize the metallic strip?
4. How can you turn a paper clip into a magnet?
