Grade Level: 3 Domain: Life Science Physical Science (Highlight one) STEM Scope: Electric and Magnetic Forces Illuminate Do Expand Earth and Space Assess # of Lessons (approximately): 5 -6 Periods (40 minutes) Connections to Journeys program: Description: Unit: 6 Lesson: 27 What are the learning objectives? The student is expected to ask questions to determine cause and affect relationships of electric or magnetic interactions between two objects not in contact with each other. The student is expected to define a simple design problem that can be solved by applying scientific ideas about magnets. What activities do students participate in? 1 Period (40 minutes) Accessing Prior Knowledge: In this activity, students explain what they think happened on the picture of the boys hair. Hook: Floating Paper Clip The teacher makes a paper clip “float” by using fishing string and a small magnet. Vocabulary: (under Expand) Electric Forces Interactions Magnet Magnetic Orientation Property Relationship Before Do 1: Reading section: A, B, or C and answer questions (under Expand) A reading passage about the concept, which includes five comprehension questions 2 Period (40 minutes) Do 1: (Scientific Investigation) (3 Parts) Forces in Action *Caution- BALOONS/Latex Allergies Students rotate through six stations where they explore magnetic forces and the force of static electricity. 1 Period (40 minutes) Do 2: (Engineering Solutions) Magnetic Race Track Students design a toy car racetrack that can move a toy car around the racetrack in 30 seconds or less using the force of magnetism. 1 Period (40 minutes) Assessments: Argue: Claim-Evidence-Reasoning- Students are asked to write an explanation about forces that can affect objects when they aren’t touching. Notes about short answer or open-ended response: Multiple-choice asks questions regarding concepts taught. Good overview. Open-ended: Can be used for quick write/prompt for writing Recommended activities under “Expand”: A set of ideas and activities that can help further elaborate on the conceptMath Connections A, B, and C- A practice that uses grade-level appropriate math activities to address the concept Content connection videos- Inquiry videos that engage students and provide meaning Science rock and Science Rock Interactive- A musical/video software platform where students can sing standardsbased science songs and kinesthetically dance to the tune
