Adjust the focus so that you can see the cells clearly.
Move the slide around so that you can observe different cells.
Observe and draw a cell that does not appear to be dividing. Label it
“At Rest.”
Identify cells that are in different stages of division, and draw at least
4 different stages.
Show the sequence of the stages of cell division by numbering your
drawings 1 to 4.

Place the slide of the onion root tip on the MicroSlide-Viewer. The
slide shows cells in different stages of cell division.

Draw Conclusions
Inquiry Skill Tip
1. In the cells you observed, how could you tell which ones
were dividing?
2. Which part of the cell can you infer seemed to get larger
before the cell split?
3. Inquiry Skill—Sequence How did you decide the sequence
of the stages in cell division?
Investigate Self-Assessment
Agree
When you
sequence, you
decide in which
order events
occurred. Look
for clues in the
things you observe.
Notice how details
are different, and
decide which must
have changed to
produce the other.
Not Sure
Disagree
I followed the directions for
this investigation.
I observed the different stages of onion
root cell division.

Use a MicroSlide-Viewer to observe single-celled organisms
dividing, or look for examples in reference books or on the
Internet. How does cell division in a single-celled organism
compare with division in the cells in the onion root tip?
Materials
Here are some materials that you might use.
List additional materials that you need.

3. Based on your observations, how does cell division in a single-celled
organism compare with division in the cells in the root tip?
