Summer Undergraduate Research Program 2017 Faculty Project Proposal Submission Faculty Name: Robert Nissenson, Ph.D. Email: [email protected] Phone Number: 415-575-0553 Department/Organization Affiliation: Department of Medicine, Endocrine Research Unit Preferred Method of Contact: email Project Name(s): Early Response Genes for G Protein Signaling in Mesenchymal Stem Cells General Topic (Keywords): stem cells; G proteins; adipogenesis; osteogenesis; RNAseq Project Description(s): Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in the bone marrow serve as progenitors for multiple differentiated lineages including adipocytes and osteoblasts. G protein signaling is known to regulate the fate of MSCs, but the details of this regulation are poorly understood. In this project, genetic manipulation of G protein signaling, together with RNAseq, will be used to identify genes that are activated early in response to G protein activation. Candidate genes so identified will be tested for their role in promoting differentiation of MSCs to the adipocyte and osteoblast lineages. Desired Skills or Experience: Basic laboratory skills including cell culture, mouse handling, and molecular biology. Limited experience is OK. Time Commitment: We are flexible, but 5 days/week would be best during the summer. Preferred Starting Date: We are flexible, but as early as possible in the summer is best.
