Charles Darwin Research Paper
Darwin wasn’t the most scientific mind in his younger years, he later in his older age,
(starting around 20-30s) he became interested in bird watching and led to the discovery of
the theory of evolution. The theory of evolution is that evolution is change in the heritable
traits of biological populations over successive generations. Evolutionary processes give rise
to diversity at every level of biological organization, including the levels of species,
individual organisms, and molecules. (Bing definition) what this means is that we all came
from the same sort of thing, starting back to simple singular cells, prokaryotes, to what we
are now through evolving and changing.
Around the age of 25 Charles Darwin had the opportunity to go on around a fiveyear voyage on the ship the HMS Beagle in the year 1831. On this long trip that he took, he
went to a couple of places including Australia and the Galapagos islands. He is very well
known for his time that he went studying in the set of islands. Mostly for the fact that is
where he created the Theory of Evolution. While he was on the trip he collected many
animals, and compared how they were built and how they looked. While on the voyage he
noticed three things, species vary globally, locally, and over time.
Darwin also researched Finches, multiple species of them that have been divided up
by their characteristics of their beaks. Some had longer more rounded, while some had
shorter straighter beaks. He had noticed this and took it in for more research. To then find
out that they all originated from the same type of bird (finch) and have all evolved with
their surroundings, to what type of food Is there that they need longer beaks to reach, or
shorter beaks because the food is close and very available.
During this journey Darwin also came across what is the theory of natural selection.
The theory Natural selection is the differential survival and reproduction of individuals due
to differences in phenotype. It is a key mechanism of evolution, the change in heritable
traits of a population over time. The term "natural selection" was popularized by Charles
Darwin who compared it with artificial selection, now more commonly referred to as
selective breeding (Bing definitions). And for this to work there is four conditions,
individuals with a population differ, differences in the most part transfer from parent to
offspring, some species are more successful at reproduction and surviving than others and
finally, the successful individuals succeed because of their traits inherited and that they will
pass to their offspring. What this means is that due to the type of habitat species are in,
some will grow accordingly faster than others, then to strive, some will not and have a
chance of dying.
