1. Vocabulary Glands: Organs that produce a secretion.
Villi:
Hairlike projections in the small intestine where absorption of nutrients takes place
Peristalsis:
Alternate waves of relaxing and contracting of the muscular wall of the digestive tube.
Sphincter:
Valve like structure that prevents fluids from backing up.

Human digestive system
organ name
Main functions, chemical made
1. physical digestion (teeth)to increase surface contact. 2. Chemical digestion of carbs starts here.
1. moistens food to ease swallowing.
2. Amylase (in saliva) for digestion of carbs. 1. food is moved by peristalsis into stomach. 1. Produces hydrochloric acid
2. Produces pepsin to start digesting proteins
3. Churning (movement) mixes foods
1. Forms 3 enzymes (amylase, trypsin lipase)
2. produces sodium bicarbonate to neutralize acid.
1. Liver produces bile to emulsify (break into droplets) fats
2. Bile is stored in the gallbladder (sent to small intestine.
1. Final digestion of nutrients is completed
2. peristaltic movements deliver chime to L. I.
3. Digested food is absorbed in villi (villus) into blood stream.
1. Vestigial structure not known function
1. Absorbs large amounts of water.
2. Eliminates undigested food as solid waste.

Vertebrates: Have 1 way digestive system with long small intestine where absorption takes place (s. I. to blood.)
Gastric makes reference to stomach (gastric juice)
• Layer of villi increases contact surface
• A villus contains capillaries to absorb sugars, amino acids, nucleotides, vitamins, minerals and water. • They also contain a Lacteal. Lymph vessel that absorbs fatty acids and glycerol.
