Mammal Digestion
The digestive system is composed of
the digestive or alimentary tube and
accessory digestive organs.
•
Each of the organs contributes to the digestive
process in several unique ways.
The length of the digestive tract
depends on the type of food ingested
by animals.
*Mouth-foodstuffs
are broken down.
*Esophagus-A
simple conduit
between the mouth
and stomach.
*Stomach-chemical
digestion of protien
initiated and
foodstuffs reduced
to liquid form.
*pancreas-provides
A potent mixture of digestive enzymes to the small
intestine.
*Small Intestine-where the final stages of chemical digestion occur and where almost all nutrients are absorbed.
*Large Intestine-(major difference among species in extent and importance)-in all animals water is absorbed, bacterial
fermentation takes place and feces are formed.
