TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY
ETHICS…

What does the term “Ethic” mean to you?
ETHICS
My personal definition…
 Ethics: A philosophical code of conduct
between people and their society with the
concepts of right and wrong, good and evil,
justice and virtue. Sometimes well defined (I.E.
medical and business ethics).

CULTURE, ETHICS, VALUES, MORALS?

Does he mean Essex?
CULTURE, ETHICS, VALUES, MORALS?

Culture: Socially transmitted behavior patterns, beliefs
and other products of human thought that are
characteristics of a population.

Morals: Often a synonym with Ethic. An individual
guiding principle between what's right and wrong.

Value: The underlying beliefs and Attitudes that help
determine ones actual conduct.
CULTURE, ETHICS, VALUES, MORALS?

A Value establishes a moral standard for an
individual such that action may be taken to
achieve a goal and an Ethic is to ensure that
the action designed to achieve a goal will be
done without violating a rule.

PWE: Protestant Work Ethic: A belief that places
a taboo on idleness, and industriousness is
considered a religious ideal, waste is a vice,
and frugality a virtue, complacency and failure
are outlawed, ambition and success are taken
as sure signs of god’s favor. The universal sign
of sin is poverty and the crowning sign of gods
favor is wealth.

Immigration:
 Over
55 Million Immigrants traveled to America
(over four centuries)
 This movement represents the largest movement of
human beings to any other place in the history of
mankind.
 The fact that this is a country who's populous is
either directly or indirectly immigrants directly
relates to our Culture, Ethics, Values and morals.


Secular Humanists: Encourages people to think
for themselves and question authority and
suggests that the morality of our actions should
be judged by their consequences in this world.
They don’t rely on Gods or supernatural forces
to solve their problems or provide guidance for
their behavior.
ETHICS
“When negative consequences (of technological innovations)
are immediate, stakeholders sometimes can assess costs and
negotiate remedies and compensations—although when the
costs and benefits accrue to different communities and
demographic (ethnic) groups, both analysis and remediation
can be difficult. When negative impacts of technological
change manifest only after lengthy delay during which the
offending technology is thoroughly adopted into commerce,
correction becomes much more difficult.”
Edward Woodhouse
