NEW BALANCE AND STOUFFER’S LEAN CUISINE
COMMERCIALS CHOSEN BY EISNER MUSEUM
FOR POSITIVE PORTRAYALS OF WOMEN
Spots Created by Messner Vetere Berger McNamee Schmetterer Euro RSCG
NEW YORK, JULY 30, 2001 – Two popular commercials created by New Yorkbased Messner Vetere Berger McNamee Schmetterer Euro RSCG (MVBMS),
have been selected to be part of an upcoming exhibit at Milwaukee’s Eisner
Museum of Design and Advertising, it was announced today. “Fax,” a spot for
New Balance Athletic Shoes, and “Dinnertime Confessions” a commercial for
Stouffer’s Lean Cuisine, were chosen as part of the "You've Come a Long Way,
Baby!" show opening August 14, an exploration of how the feminist revolution
of 1970s America was portrayed by Madison Avenue.
These two spots have been chosen for the section of the exhibit dedicated to
examining positive images of women in advertising. As a synopsis of the show
states, "From Virginia Slims and Frigidaire, to Maidenform, Clairol and
L'Oréal, this exhibit will explore the depiction of women in advertising at a
time of cultural change."
“Fax,” the New Balance spot, opens on a woman working out on a treadmill.
Behind her, a fax machine on her desk spits out papers that fall unnoticed onto
the floor and are blown away by the fan cooling her on the treadmill. The
ending voiceover says “Connect with yourself. Achieve New Balance.”
The Stouffer’s Lean Cuisine spot, “Dinnertime Confessions,” opens in an
elevator, with several women revealing what they had for dinner the previous
evening. With such unhealthy confessions as “three cookies,” or a “four day-old
burrito,” the women are nonplussed when their co-worker describes her healthy,
delicious meal of herb-roasted chicken with roasted red-skinned potatoes, a Lean
Cuisine meal. A voiceover follows, explaining that Stouffer’s Lean Cuisine meals
make it “easy to do something good for yourself.”
“As the role of women has changed, so has their image in advertising,” said Ron
Berger, CEO, MVBMS. “These two spots highlight ways in which the products
help women balance health and work, a key theme in modern culture. We’re v
ery proud that our work has been chosen to showcase the positive side of this
theme.”
