Introduction
Immunology is the science that study the
recognition of aggressors and how the
body defends itself from the action of
these
antigens.
The
Immunopharmacology Laboratory of the
Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB)
carries several lines of research, such as
inflammation and hypersensitivity.
Inflammation is a body response against harmful agents, which is
characterized by vasodilatation and fluids flow into the inflamed
tissues. These events are mediated by various chemical agents for
example PGE2, bradykinin and serotonin and leukocyte migration into
the inflamed tissue. The cells migrate to the endothelium by attaching
to selectin and integrin molecules on the endothelium cells. Finally,
when the leukocytes reach the inflamed tissue they perform their
functions and the inflammatory process may end or evolve to
chronicity.
Hypersensitivity is an exaggerated
response of the body against antigens.
The process started by the exposure to
antigen which lead to the activation of
Th2 cells and B cells and IgE
production that will bind to Fc receptor
of mast cell. The reexpouser to the
antigen will create a pathologic
reaction.
Objective
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory property of warifteine, an alkaloid of Cissampelos sympodialis, a medicinal plant used in Brazil
to treat airway inflammatory processes.
Materials and Methods

Results
Conclusion
The results demonstrated that the compound Warifeine modulates the inflammatory process by decreasing the edema formation induced by phlogistic agents.
These results will allow us to investigate more this plant and its compounds in order to prove that Cissampelos sympodialis can be used as an alternative
medicine to treat inflammatory processes including allergic diseases.
