CELLS AND MORE
Kelsey LaDale Vincent
Three parts of the Cell Theory
• All organisms are made of cells
• Cells are the basic unit of life
• All cells come from other living cells
Cell Shape and Cell Function
• The shape will affect the amount of surface area
available. This will affect the way the cell will interact
with the environment.
• The shape affects the way the cell can function. (Ex.Skin cells are flat to protect. Red blood cells have an
indent to carry and transport oxygen molecules.)
Factors that Limit Cell Size
• If a cell gets too big, it will take too long to transport
necessary molecules.
• The size can limit the volume ratio, diffusion, and the
amount of DNA diffusion. (The bigger it is, the more
DNA it needs)
Prokaryote and Eukaryote Cells
• Prokaryote cells do not have a nucleus, and
Eukaryote cells do.
• Prokaryote cells are not found in humans, and
Eukaryote cells are.
• Prokaryote cells are always unicellular, and Eukaryote
cells are often multicellular.
• Prokaryote cells reproduce/divide by binary fission,
and Eukaryote cells reproduce/divide by
mitosis/meiosis.
Layer of Organization within a Living Thing
• Cells- basic unit of life
• Tissue- group of cells with a specific function
• Organ- group of tissues with specific function
• Organ system- group of organs with a specific
function
• Organism- independent individual that possesses all
characteristics of life.
