In a chemical reaction, substances present at the start change to make new substances.
The chemical reaction can be written in a short-hand form, called a word equation,
e.g.
STARTING SUBSTANCE A
+
STARTING SUBSTANCE B
"
NEW SUBSTANCE C
+
NEW SUBSTANCE D
STARTING SUBSTANCE K
"
NEW SUBSTANCE L
+
NEW SUBSTANCE M
STARTING SUBSTANCE X

STARTING SUBSTANCE Y

NEW SUBSTANCE Z
The starting substances in chemical reactions are called the reactants.
The new substances which are produced are called the products.
In a word equation:
Example:
the '+' sign means 'and'
the '' sign means 'changed into'
the reactants come in front of the arrow
the products come after the arrow
The food in our bodies joins up with oxygen taken from the air to produce
water vapour and carbon dioxide which we breathe out.
The word equation is:

Write the word equation for each of the following chemical reactions.
In the Blast Furnace, iron is made by the reaction of iron ore with carbon monoxide gas.
Carbon dioxide gas is also produced.
Cars are fitted with catalytic convertors that convert harmful gases to carbon dioxide
and nitrogen. Carbon monoxide reacts with nitrogen oxides on the catalyst surface.

In a car engine, petrol reacts with the oxygen of the air. Carbon dioxide and water are
released into the air from the car exhaust system.
Magnesium burns in carbon dioxide gas. A black solid (carbon) and a white powder
(magnesium oxide) are formed.
Plants are able to make glucose from carbon dioxide gas in a reaction called
photosynthesis. The other reactant is water, taken in through the roots. Oxygen gas is
also formed in the process. Energy from the Sun is required for the reaction.
