Recessive Genetic
Disorders
Do you remember…?
• True or False :
• A) The father determine a childs gender
• B) individuals may transmit characteristics to their offspring which they
themselves do not show
• C) identical twins are of the same gender
• A recessive trait is expressed when the individual is homozygous
recessive for that trait.
• *Recall: what does it mean to be homozygous recessive for a trait? (think pair
share)
• An individual who is heterozygous for a recessive disorder is called a carrier.
Cystic Fibrosis
• One of the most common recessive genetic disorders
• The gene that codes for a membrane protein is defective
• Causes excessive mucus production and digestive and respiratory failure
• There is no cure, must have a daily cleaning of mucus form lungs
Albinism
• This is caused by altered genes, resulting in the absence of the skin pigment
melanin in hair and eyes.
• Genes do not produce normal amounts of the pigment melanin
• Results: no color in the skin, eyes and hair.
• Skin is susceptible to UV damage
• Vision problems
• There is no cure, must protect skin form the sun, need visual rehabilitation
Tay-sachs disease
• Read in your textbook with a partner the additional two recessive disorders
and we will fill in these as a class.
