S EAT TLE T IMES C HILDREN ’ S C RUSADE V OLUME 1, I SSUE 1 A PRIL 8, 2010 B ACKROUND 1212, a young French shepherd named Stephen, from Cloyes had a vision that Jesus commanded him to gather an army to fight for the Holy Land. He gathered an army that included lots of children. The group marched to Paris to try and persuade King Phillip to take up the Crusade. King Phillip was not pleased with this and ordered them to go home. But this didn’t stop Stephan. He went around telling everyone about the vision and what Jesus had told him to do. Stephan told the group that crossing the Mediterranean or any other waterways was no problem as the water would part and they would be protected by God. By June 1212, it was said that Stephan had gathered 30,000 children! They marched south through France not sure what to expect. The Children’s Crusade was not an official crusade. It was never blessed by the pope. But this never stopped the children. The pope couldn’t bless a ‘crusade’ doomed to failure. But the church also did not stop it. Why? The church thought that the actions of the children might shame kings and emperors into getting a proper crusade going to capture Jerusalem. Lots of the children were not used to walking such a long distance. The journey from Vendome to Marseilles caused many children to drop out. Some even died of exhaustion. The sea did not part as Stephan has said and they had to cross the Mediterranean Sea by boat. They got on seven boats in Marseilles and that was the last anything was heard of them. C HILDREN ’ S C RUSADE P AGE 2 C AUSE A RTICLE 1 One cause of Children’s Crusade was obedience to God. Being obedient to God is very important in the Christian religion. It is a sin to disobey God’s commands and you could go to hell unless you ask for forgiveness and repent of your sins. Jesus commanded Stephan of Cloyes to gather an army and go fight for the Holy Land. King Phillip did not allow for this to happen but Stephan did it anyway. The author of the website: historylearningsite.co.uk said “By June 1212, Stephen is said to have gathered 30,000 followers around him - all children.” Stephan decided to listen to what Jesus said and didn’t obey what the king said. A blogger on wiki.answer.com posted that another reason why the crusaders of the Children’s Crusade were to crusade was because of their religion. “They believed that if they go to the Holy Land they could convert the people there into being Christians.” These cause’s might have been a reason why the children agreed to crusade. In my opinion, one of the reasons for this was because that’s where religion started. “The Christians wanted the Holy Land because that’s where Christianity started.” Stated the author of the Encyclopedia of Britannica. The same author said “Many went to bring their religion to the Muslims and thought that they could make them repent for their heathen ways.” That is another one of many reasons for the Children’s Crusade. As I have stated before, religion was an important cause of the Children’s Crusade. I hope you agree with my opinions.
