Ch. 11 Endocrine System Endocrine System—secrete hormones into body fluids Exocrine glands-secrete onto body surface through ducts (sweat and salivary glands) Endocrine Function: 1. Regulate metabolic processes 2. Aid in transport through membranes 3. Regulate water and electrolyte balances 4. Roles in reproduction, development, and growth \ Hormone-biochemical that a cell secretes -Action restricted to the hormone’s target cells that contain receptors for the specific hormone Hormone Types 1. Steroid-diffuse into cells and direct protein synthesis 2. Non steroid hormones-amines, peptides, proteins—combine with receptors in target cell membranes 3. Prostaglandins-lipids made from a fatty acid in cell membranes—made by many cells—act locally, work quickly Hormone secretion controlled by Negative Feedback systems-gland secretes hormone until concentration is high enough, then the gland is inhibited (STOPPED). When concentration falls, inhibition ceases and secretion begins again. Gland secretion is controlled by: 1. Hypothalamus controls anterior pituitary, which stimulates other glands. 2. Nervous system controls some glands directly. 3. Some respond directly to internal environment changes. (Pancreas secretes insulin based on levels of blood glucose) PowerPoint of Gland Where is it? Show diagram What hormones does it secrete? Purposes of those hormones? At least 2 Disorders related to the gland or hormones 1. Pituitary intro and Posterior Pituitary hormones 2. Anterior Pituitary 3. Thyroid4. Parathyroid5. Adrenal intro and Adrenal Medulla 6. Adrenal cortex 7. Pancreas8. Pineal 9. Thymus, 10.Reproductive (ovaries and testes)
