Basic functions of the endocrine system (3 points):
• The main role of the endocrine system is to relay chemical messages through the body by
releasing hormones into the bloodstream
• Works in conjunction with the nervous system
• Releases hormones that organize at certain stages the development of the nervous system and the
development of certain body tissues
• Releases hormones that activate behaviors such as alertness / sleepiness, excitability, sexual
behavior, concentration, aggressiveness, reactions to stress, and desire for companionship
• A three-point essay should show a strong understanding of the system as a whole and what
as a whole the endocrine system does for your body
Specific function of the thyroid gland (1 point):
• Controls metabolism through the release of the hormone thyroxin
Specific function of the pancreas (1 point):
• Regulates blood-sugar levels by secreting two regulating hormones: insulin and glucagon
Specific function of the pituitary gland (1 point):
• Regulates many behaviors and other glands, produces the largest number of different hormones
and thus has the widest range of effects on the body’s functions
