Earth’s Interior Project
A. Objective: The objective of this project is for you to demonstrate knowledge about the Earth’s interior. In groups, you will orally
and visually present a 3 dimensional scale model of the Earth’s interior with an accompanying poster. Information and data for
the project can be gathered from the textbook and/or from the internet.
B. Specifications:
 Poster:
o Minimum 11” x17”
o Typed with a font large enough to be seen from 8ft. Size 22 font or larger is recommended.
o Must contain at least 3 neat, well thought out and labeled illustrations, which can be hand-drawn or gathered from the
internet. SITE YOUR SOURCES!!!
o Must have a title (example: The Earth Inside, Earth’s Layers, etc.)
o Each group members’ name must be visible on the front. You will work in groups of 4 (3 in few cases).
 Model:
o No smaller than the size of a cantaloupe, but if it doesn’t fit through the school bus door, then it is too big.
o Materials of your choice. (Styrofoam spheres, paper mache, paint, Play-Doh, colored clay, etc. NO GLITTER!!!)
o Must be cut out so the interior layers of the Earth are visible and labeled.
o Model can be stuck to the poster or free standing.
 Oral Presentation:
o Each group member will take turns describing the temperature, composition and general role of the different layers.
o Points will be deducted if you use notes such as flashcards.
o In your presentation you will also answer: What role does my layer play in the movement of tectonic plates?
o Groups will have 3 minutes to present.
o Layers to present are:
1. Inner core
5. Asthenosphere
2. Outer core
6. Lithosphere
3. Lower Mantle
7. Oceanic Continental
4. Upper Mantle
8. Continental Crust

Craftsmanship Poster and model is neat and legible from 8 feet. It
shows effort.
Poster meets specifications.
Poster is a team effort (team members can identify
the parts they were responsible for completing).
Science
Question is answered fully.
All three illustrations are present and properly
labeled.
Illustrations are clear and adequately present the
required information.
Understanding of the role of each layer and how it
relates to plate tectonics is evident.
Each group member’s oral presentation is accurate
and clearly heard to the back of the room.
Writing
Spelling, punctuation, and grammar use are
correct and appropriate.
