Advertising Techniques
Nostalgia
Plainfolks, back-to-nature, just the way grandma used
to make it, back in the good old days.
Bandwagon
Everyone who is anyone is buying this product. Don’t
be the only one without it. Don’t be left out!
Transfer/Fantasy Advertisers hope that the consumer will tend to
transfer qualities to the products and themselves and
purchase the item. Use superheros, super athletes,
beautiful people, rich people, etc. to sell item.
Humor
Sense Appeal
People may tend to remember an ad if it makes them
laugh and may purchase the product because of the
positive association with it.
Sounds or pictures that appeal to the senses are
featured.
Statistics
People tend to be impressed with “facts” and statistics
even if they have little or no meaning.
Testimonial
Important or well-known people testify that they use
the product and so should you.
See if you can identify the advertising technique used for each ad shown
on the overhead. Be able to give one point of evidence for your choice.

Think about the reasons you buy or use specific items and answer the
following question.
1. Which advertising technique do you feel works best on you? Why?
2. Which advertising technique do you feel has the least influence on
your decision to buy/use a product? Why?
3. What is your favorite ad (television or magazine)? Tell me a little
about the ad. Why is it your favorite? What ad technique does it
use?
