Mixture




Mixtures are a combination of 2 or more substances that do not form a new
substance.
The substances keep their same physical properties.
The substances can be separated fairly easily.
Examples: salad, trail mix, iron filings and sand, salt and pepper, cereal and milk.
Questions:

What is a mixture?

How could you separate a mixture of iron filings and sand?

What physical properties could you use to separate a salad?

What method could you use to separate salt and pepper?
Solution




Solutions are a special kind of mixture.
In a solution, one substance spreads out evenly (dissolves) in another substance.
Even though one substance dissolves in another, most physical properties remain
the same.
o Example: sugar and water – Even though the sugar dissolves in the water,
if you taste the water, it will taste sweet because the sugar has maintained
its physical property of sweet taste.
Salt water, air, Kool-Aide, and carbonated drinks are all examples of solutions.
Questions:

What makes solutions a special kind of mixture?

When you mix salt and water, which substance dissolves?

How could you separate a sugar water solution?

How could you separate a salt water solution?

Give an example of a solution and describe what happens to each substance.

What does it mean when something dissolves?
Magnetism





Magnetism is a force of attraction.
The area around a magnet where the force of magnetism can be felt is called the
magnetic field. All magnets have a magnetic field.
Magnets attract iron and a few other magnetic materials.
Aluminum IS NOT magnetic.
Magnetism can be used as a property of matter to determine whether an object is
magnetic or not.
Questions:

What is magnetism?

Which item would be attracted to a magnet: a rubber band, a Ziploc bag, a
needle, or an eraser?

Which item would not be attracted to a magnet: a nail, a coke can, a needle, or a
staple?

Why can two magnets move each other without touching?
Magnetic Poles




All magnets have to magnetic poles (north pole and south pole).
The poles of the magnets are where the magnetic force is the strongest.
Opposite poles attract, or pull, on each other.
Like poles repel, or push against, each other.
Questions:

How many poles do all magnets have? What are the poles names?

Where is the force of magnetism strongest on a magnet?

If you lined two magnets north pole to north pole, what would happen?

If you lined two magnets north pole to south pole, what would happen?
