Chapter 5 Reading Quiz
1) Describe the two main social classes in the Roman Republic and explain some
ways that order was maintained.
Patricians – rich, landowning minority of the Roman Republic
Plebians – the poor class, the majority of the population consisting of small farmers and
poorer people
Initially, the senate favored the Patricians over the Plebians. However, this was the
minority of the people, and the Republic was created to represent all citizens. So, the
council of plebs and the tribunes to the plebs were created to represent the plebian class
and give them a voice in the government; this kept inequality to a minimum. Eventually,
marriage between class was allowed and plebs could also run for office.
2) Who was Hannibal? (Time Period, Location, Key Achievements)
Hannibal was the general of the Carthaginian army in northern Africa during the second
century. He crossed the alps with 30,000 men and elephants and destroyed Rome, but the
Rome sacked and burned Carthage and laid siege to Carthage then capture the
Carthaginian people and sold them as slaves in the in the 3rd Punic War at the Battle of
Zama when Hannibal was forced to make a decisive military decision to return to
Carthage.
3) Name two factors that contributed to the decline and fall of the Roman Empire.
One factor that contributed to the decline and fall of the Roman Empire was the split of
the East and West Empire. This weakened the west empire then lead to the gradual fall.
Another contributing factor for the fall of the Roman Empire was the rise in inflation.
This weakened the people of the empire financially and the government didn’t have
enough money to fund the military to fight off Germanic Invasions.

1) Describe the two main social classes in the Roman Republic and explain some
ways that order was maintained.
The two classes were the Patricians and the Plebeians. The Patricians were the small
wealthy class who would arrest the Plebeians. The Plebeians were the poor class who
eventually got protection from the Tribunes and consul of the Plebeians.
2) Who was Diocletian? (Time Period, Location, Key Achievements)
Diocletion was a ruler during the common era of Rome during the 3rd century. During the
spread of Christianity, Dioletion was the last person to persecute the Christians. He also
split the Roman Empire into two parts; east and west. Dioletian was the emperor of the
east which was much more prosperous then the west.
3) Name two factors that contributed to the decline and fall of the Roman Empire.
The invasion of northern Europe by the Huns caused an influx of invading Germanic
Tribes into Rome and other parts of the Western Empire. Rome was unable to defend
itself due to its decreased military power because of the influence of Christianity and the
lack of involvement of Roman citizens. This, along with the movement of the capital and
the wealthy class to the East caused the western Roman economy to decrease. They
could no longer afford to defend themselves, and thus the Western Roman empire fell.
