Decision One: Concept Map and Learning Unit Vocabulary Unit Essential Question What are the causes and effects of the forces involved in the changing of earth’s surface? 5.25-5.29 Chemical weathering, physical weathering, acid rain, erosion, deposition, plate tectonics, landforms, fault movement, earthquakes, volcanoes, wind/water forces, dams, levees, terraces, contour plowing, Unit Topic/Concept Earth Science Major Concept/Skills Physical & Chemical Weathering 5.25 Plate Tectonics And Faults 5.27 Erosion/Deposition 5.26 Ice and Wind Forces 5.28 Technology 5.29 Break-Up of U.S.S.R Unit Planning Guide Teacher/Team: 5th Grade School/Grade/Subjects: Science Unit Topic: Earth Science Decision 2: What are the Essential Questions of the Unit? Make sure most important/critical questions also have extending/refining questions. 1. What is weathering? Compare/contrast physical and chemical weathering. 2. What forces are involved in the changes of earth’s surface? Compare/contrast erosion and deposition. 3. How have wind and ice changed the shape of earth’s surface? 4. What forces cause earthquakes, volcanoes, and mountains? What is a fault? What effect do plate tectonics have on changes in earth’s surface? 5. How can technology help control land and water forces? Decision 3: What is the performance or product project that is the culminating activity of the unit? Students’ Assignment Page for the Culminating Activity Essential Question of the Culminating Activity: By observing graphics of landforms, can we apply what we’ve learned to determine which weathering process formed various landforms? Paragraph Description of Culminating Activity: Have the students collect magazine and newspaper articles and photographs that relate to the effects of moving water on land. Challenge them to use graphic sources for information in order to determine which weathering process is occurring in the photographs: erosion, deposition, or mass movement. Create a web display of the visuals. Steps or Task Analysis of Culminating Activity: (See above)
